ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Regents volleyball team picked up its first home win of the 2012 season on Friday night against the Marian University Sabres. The Regents entered Friday night's match on a 9-game losing streak before defeating the Sabres in straight sets. After surviving a closely contested opening set 26-24, Rockford took control in the second and third sets winning 25-17 and 25-21 respectively. Rockford has had Marian's number since the two schools joined the Northern Athletics Conference back in the fall of 2006. With Friday's win, the Regents are now 6-1 against the Sabres in NAC play.
Rockford executed well at the net with three players recording seven or more kills in the match. Sophomore Laina Scheri (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) had a monster game smashing a match-high 17 kills. It was the most kills for the sophomore in a match since she recorded 19 against Grinnell College back on September 21st. Scheri rounded out her evening nicely with 7 digs, 2 service aces and an assist. Senior Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) and junior Heather Hyland (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) each recorded 7 kills in the win. Lawler also added 12 digs and a block to her stat line while Hyland recorded 9 digs for the Regents.
Senior Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) and freshman Emily Johnson (Santee, Calif./Santana) also played well in the match. Jones had double-digit digs for the 23rd time this season as she recorded a match-high 16 against the Sabres. Johnson played a solid all around mathc getting a match-high 29 assists to go along with 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
The volleyball team will be back in action on Saturday, October 20th at 6:30 p.m. against the Lakeland College Muskies. Saturday's match is also Senior Night for the Regents as it is the final home match of the season.
