ROCKFORD, Ill.- The final game for the 2013 Rockford University volleyball team took place Saturday afternoon at the Seaver Center. The Benedictine Eagles, the 3rd place team in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, came into town to face the Regents. Before the game the Regents honored three seniors for their contributions to the team. Heather Hyland (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) was a four year starter for Rockford. Gwendolyn Scott (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) played for the Regents for three years. Rebecca Johns (Belvidere, Ill./North) transferred in to finish her senior year for the Regents.
Despite the emotions on senior day, the Regents were unable to upend the Eagles. Rockford was in all three games but was never able to close out a set. They lost in three sets; 25-19, 25-18, and 25-19. Hyland led the match with 15 digs and added in 4 kills on 15 attempts. Kirsten Bergin (Mt. Morris, Ill./Forreston) tied for the Regents lead with 6 kills on 15 attempts. Taylor Rossi (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community) had another all around solid game, finishing with 6 kills, 16 assists, and 12 digs.
A young team in 2013 the Regents look to bring back nine players for the 2014 season, including five starters. Rockford finished the season 3-21 and 1-10 in the NACC.
