RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Rockford College softball team was supposed to open its season at home on Saturday with a pair of games against the Dominican University Stars; however, mother nature had other ideas. Since Rockford's field was unplayable, the games were moved to Dominican's home field.
In game one the Stars took advantage of four Rockford errors and used a six-run third inning to seal the 12-0 victory. Sophomore catcher Jessica Segalla (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) went 1-2 at the plate and senior Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) drew two walks. Pitcher Sarah Moritz (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) pitched the entire game for the Regents giving up 4 earned runs and striking out 3 batters.
Game two had a near identical feel to it as game one with the Stars using a seven-run second inning and capitalizing again on four Rockford errors for an 11-2 win. Junior Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) was a perfect 2-2 at the plate with a double and a run batted in. Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill./Trinity), Alexis Ford (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) and Jennifer Zulkanycz (Norco, Calif./Norco) each went 1-2 at the plate with Bura hitting a double and Ford and Zulkanycz each scoring a run.
The softball team will return to the field on Thursday, April 4th at Wisconsin Lutheran College. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m.
