Women's Basketball Drops NACC Opener

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Rockford University women's basketball team fell 81-53 on Saturday afternoon to the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference season opener. The victory moves the Warriors to a perfect 3-0 this season in NACC play and drops the Regents to 0-1 in the conference. Three key components to Warriors victory were points off turnovers, rebounding and bench points. Wisconsin Lutheran held a 21-10 edge in points off turnovers, outrebounded the Regents 54-35 and outscored Rockford 24-7 in bench points.

However the game was close throughout the first quarter as the Regents were able to stay within striking distance. Rockford trailed by just one point after the opening ten minutes of play and was within few seconds of entering the second quarter with a lead. Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) and Taylor May (East Moline, Ill.) carried the load for the Regents as the duo combined to score 11 of the team's 13 points. Key was especially effective finishing the opening period with 6 points, 6 rebounds and 1 steal.

Unfortunately Wisconsin Lutheran began to assert its dominance in the second quarter as the Warriors outscored the Regents 23-10. Wisconsin Lutheran opened the period on a 15-2 run and never looked back as it entered the half with a 37-23 lead. Rockford was never able to get back within striking distance in the second half as the Warriors would extend their lead to as many as 31 points en route to am 81-53 win.

Senior Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) and junior Tajanae Key each scored in double-figures for Rockford. Getzelman was once again the game's leading scorer with 20 points and 3 rebounds. Key recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.
