ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University softball team returned to action Saturday to take on MSOE on Senior Day. The Regents were looking to end their conference losing skid and to honor the seniors for their hard work and dedication the past four years. Unfortunately, Rockford was unable to capture a victory falling in both games by the finals of 8-1 and 9-2.
In game one Stefaney Kenworthy (Veedersburg, Ind.) began the game on the mound and finished all 7 innings allowing 8 runs, 6 earned, while striking out 4 batters. Kenworthy threw her eleventh complete game of the season, which leads the team.
Offensively the Regents scored immediately in their first plate appearance when Alex Storey (Dexter, Mich.) smoked a one-out triple to right-center field. After a ground out, Storey scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit back to one run, 2-1, after the first inning. Unfortunately, Rockford was unable to put together any other scoring opportunities in the game and fell by the final of 8-1. The Regents collected six hits in total in the first game.
In game two Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill.) began the game on the bump and cruised through the first two innings before running into trouble in the third and fourth allowing 6 runs in the two innings. She lasted 3 1/3 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. Following Bura, was Abigail Wellwood (Rockford, Ill.) who allowed 3 runs, all earned, in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Offensively, the Regents were held scoreless until the third inning when Bura laced a single to right field to drive in Caitlin Eiben (Racine, Wis.) from second base, after she hit a double down the right field line. Once again the run trimmed the Raiders lead down to one run, 2-1. Again in the sixth inning Rockford had another scoring opportunity as Mercedes Boykin (Belvidere, Ill.) singled through the left side of the infield to plate Kenworthy from second base. Ultimately, the Regents were unable to put together any other runs as they fell by the final of 9-2.
Playing well on the day for Rockford were Storey with two hits on the day and a run scored. Kenworthy recorded a multi-hit day with both hits coming in the first game. Boykin and Bura each collected an RBI single on the day. Wellwood also added two hits on the day.
The Rockford University softball team returns to action Sunday, April 24 to take on Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 12 p.m.
