LISLE, Ill. - The Rockford University football team (1-4, 0-2 NACC) fell 48-13 on the road Saturday afternoon to the Benedictine University Eagles (3-2, 2-0 NACC). Rockford has had a brutal opening portion of its schedule this season, playing four of its first five games on the road. Additionally, the Regents have played three teams that are currently undefeated in three different conferences. Unfortunately, one of those teams is Benedictine University. It was the Eagles' rushing attack that was the difference on Saturday. Benedictine ran the ball 58 times for 321 yards to average 5.5 yards per carry, compared to just 76 yards rushing on 28 attempts for Rockford. The Regents did outgain the Eagles through the air, 178-123, but it was not enough, as Rockford dropped its fourth straight game.
- The RU offense came out of the gates clicking on all cylinders. The Regents used 12 plays to cover 75 yards and find the end zone on the game's opening possession.
- RU quarterback Delayno Mack was sensation on the drive. Mack was a perfect 6-for-6 for 47 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown strike to tight end Adam Ambrogio, to give Rockford a quick 6-0 lead.
- The Regents continued to build upon their momentum, as the RU defense forced a turnover on the Eagles' first possession of the afternoon.
- Senior defensive back Stephen Santeramo intercepted Tyler Jarnagin's pass, and returned it 36 yards to set up the RU offense with great field position on the Benedictine 36-yard line.
- Unfortunately, Rockford was unable to capitalize and turned the ball over on downs four plays later.
- Benedictine subsequently went 69 yards on 15 plays for its first touchdown of the game. The Eagles would connect on the point after attempt to take a 7-6 advantage.
- The Eagles caught the next big break in the game, when they blocked a Rockford punt on the ensuing possession.
- Benedictine took advantage of the short field, going 36 yards on seven plays and finding the end zone, to extend their lead to 13-6.
- Following a Rockford punt, the Eagles scored a touchdown on their third straight possession, to make it a 20-6 game.
- The Benedictine special teams then made its second big play of the half, forcing and recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. The BenU offense capitalized with its fourth straight touchdown drive to take a 27-6 lead into halftime.
- The Eagles continued to build upon their lead early in the second half. Benedictine used a pair of rushing touchdowns in the third quarter to extend its advantage to 41-6.
- Despite the large deficit, the Regents continued to battle to the very end. The RU defense forced a turnover early in the fourth quarter, which led to a Regent touchdown. Austin Carlson came up with a big hit to force a fumble, which was then recovered by Dylan Peterson at the Rockford 12-yard line.
- The Regent offense then scored its second touchdown of the game on a 7-play, 88-yard drive. Delayno Mack went a perfect 3-for-3 for 68 yards on the drive. Wide receiver Kalan Miller caught two of those passes for 33 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown. Gerardo Zamudio converted the extra point, to make it a 41-13 game.
- However, it was not enough, as Benedictine went on to win by a final score of 48-13.
- Delayno Mack went 22-of-32 for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns.
- Kalan Miller caught a career-high 10 passes for 62 yards and a score.
- Adam Ambrogio finished with 3 receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown.
- Stephen Santeramo is now momentarily tied for the NACC lead after intercepting his second pass of the season. He also had 5 tackles on the day.
- Jallen Bashford finished with a game-high 13 tackles. Bashford currently leads the NACC by a wide margin with 74 total tackles this season.
- Dylan Peterson had a season-high 10 tackles and recovered a fumble.
- Austin Carlson tied his season-high with 10 tackles.
The RU football team returns home on Saturday, October 19 to face Lakeland University. Kickoff is set for 1 PM at Sam Greeley Field.
