DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Rockford University women's basketball team (1-9) dropped its final road non-conference game of the season, 88-49, to the University of Dubuque Spartans (4-3). Despite what the final score might indicate, the Regents played well for large portions of the game. Rockford hung with the Spartans the opening ten minutes, as it was just a one-possession game heading into the second quarter. Unfortunately, Dubuque outscored Rockford 35-6 in second, to take a 51-19 advantage into the intermission. The second half was much closer though, as the Regents actually outscored the Spartans, 20-16, over the final ten plus minutes. However, it was not enough, as Rockford dropped its final game of 2019.
- It was an exciting first quarter of action, with both teams playing well at various points.
- The Spartans opened the game on an 8-2 run, to take an early lead.
- However, Rockford seemed to find its rhythm offensively over the next 1:40 of play. The Regents did not miss a shot over that span, scoring four straight points, to make it a one-possession game. Emily Cox and Neve Yerk each scored two points to lead the RU attack.
- The Spartans would build their lead back up to six, before Rockford closed the period scoring five of the final seven points. Sammi Russell had two, while Neve Yerk scored three, including a layup in the closing seconds to make it a 16-13 game after one quarter of play.
- Unfortunately, the second quarter belonged to the suddenly red-hot shooting Spartans. Dubuque scored the opening 18 points of the period, on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting performance, to take a 34-13 lead. The Spartans would extend their lead to as many as 33 points before ultimately taking a 51-19 advantage into the half.
- Although the Regents played much better in the second half, they were unable to recover from the difficult second quarter. The Regents actually outscored the Spartans 20-16 over the final ten plus minutes. Four different Regents scored over that span, led by nine points from Emily Cox and seven from Kaylynne Terry. However, it was not enough, as Rockford fell by a final score of 88-49.
The RU women's basketball team returns to the court on Thursday, January 2 against Mount Mary University. Tip-off is set for 7 PM in the Seaver Center.
