Softball Cruises to a 2-0 Start to the Season

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Regents (2-0) opened their season with a pair of decisive wins on Sunday over Nazareth College (0-2) and Martin Luther College (2-5). The Regents used a four-run first inning, coupled with phenomenal pitching from Rylee Klema, to secure an easy 4-0 win over Nazareth to begin the season. In Rockford's second game of the day against Martin Luther, the Regents again used a big first inning, this time scoring five runs en route to a 10-5 win. Rockford was dominant throughout the entire day, as the Regents never trailed in either game.

Rockford 4 Nazareth 0

  • Rylee Klema was simply outstanding inside the circle for the Regents. Klema allowed just two base runners over the first five innings combined, with neither of them getting past first base.
  • The only time she was in trouble during the entire game came in the sixth inning. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with one out off a pair of hits and a hit batter. Fortunately, Klema dug in and retired the next two batters via a strikeout and a pop-out, to end the threat and keep Nazareth scoreless.
  • Klema then retired the side in order in the seventh, to secure the victory.
  • Offensively, Rockford used a four-run first to leap out to an insurmountable lead.
  • Annaka Bartz opened the bottom half of the inning with a walk, and then stole second to put herself in scoring position with one out.
  • One batter later, Mikayla Seay ripped a double to left center, driving in Rockford's first run of the season.
  • After a Gretchen Schrubbe single moved Seay to third, Michaela Spanbauer knocked her in with a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • Rockford would add two more runs in the frame off RBI singles from Jessica Kearns and Brittany Bihun, as the Regents went on to win by a final score of 4-0.

Rockford 10 Martin Luther 5

  • Rockford again used a big first inning to take a stranglehold on the game. The Regents quickly loaded the bases with one out off walks from Emily Cox and Gretchen Schrubbe and a single off the bat of Mikayla Seay. Michaela Spanbauer followed with a single of her own, to drive in the game's first run. Two batters later, Brittany Bihun smacked a two-out single into center, driving in one run, with another run scoring off a Knight error. Rockford would tack on two additional runs off a Destiny Darmon two-run single and take a 5-0 lead after one inning of play.
  • The Knights answered with a single run in second off three hits, to make it a 5-1 Rockford lead.
  • Emily Cox quickly responded with a two-run home run to center and extended Rockford's lead to 7-1.
  • The back-and-forth nature of the game continued in the top of the third, with the Knights plating a pair of runs off a home run to lead off the frame and an RBI single.
  • The score remained 7-3 until the bottom of the fourth, when Rockford added two more runs and essentially put the game out of reach.
  • The Regents strung together back-to-back-to-back extra-base hits to score their two runs. Gretchen Schrubbe began the hit parade with a one-out triple to right field. Michaela Spanbauer followed with an RBI double to left field and Jessica Kearns laced an RBI triple into right, to make it 9-3.
  • Both teams scored in the sixth, with Martin Luther adding a pair of runs off two hits, and Rockford answering with a single run in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Rockford took advantage of a pair of Knight errors and a Jessica Kearns RBI single to make it 10-5.
  • Inside the circle, the Regents used the duo of Mikayla Seay and Rylee Klema to contain the Knight offense.
  • Seay pitched well overall and gave Rockford a solid 5.1 innings of work, to earn up her first win of the season.
  • Klema came in and tossed the final 1.2 innings of the game. She allowed just one hit and no runs, as Rockford picked up the 10-5 win and moved to 2-0 on the season.

Nazareth

  • Pitcher Rylee Klema stole the show for the Regents. Klema fired a complete game shutout in her first start of the season. The sophomore went all 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits, while striking out 5 and walking none. Klema was dominant throughout, as she allowed multiple runners to reach base in just one of her seven innings of work.
  • Jessica Kearns went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Mikayla Seay was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Brittany Bihun went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Gretchen Schrubbe finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Michaela Spanbauer was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Martin Luther

  • Rockford had four different players record at least two RBIs in the game.
  • Emily Cox went 1-for-3 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.
  • Michaela Spanbauer was 2-for-4 with a double, 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.
  • Jessica Kearns finished 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 runs batted in.
  • Destiny Darmon was also 2-for-4 with 2 runs batted in.
  • Mikayla Seay picked up the win and moved to 1-0 inside the circle this season. Seay went 5.1 innings, allowing 4 earned runs and striking out three.
  • Rylee Klema fired the final 1.2 innings. Klema allowed no runs and just one hit, while striking out one.

The Regents return to the diamond on Monday, March 9 at 10 AM central time to face the United States Coast Guard and then at noon central time against SUNY Oneonta.
