LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (4-2) swept the Lakeland University Muskies (0-6) Wednesday afternoon. The Regents battled in both games making for an exciting two games. Rockford was in control for most of the first game, scoring in every inning except for the bottom of the sixth and going on to win 9-7. The Regents were down 10-8 in the last inning of the second game and rallied for three runs to take a come-from-behind victory, 11-10.
Game 1: Rockford 9 Lakeland 7
- The Muskies got things started in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly to center field to score the first run of the game.
- With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Regents joined the action when Mikayla Seay hit a double to right-center and Gretchen Schrubbe singled through the left side to score Seay.
- Lakeland added to its lead, scoring two more runs off of a single and a double to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second.
- Rockford answered by scoring in the bottom of the second, third and fourth innings while holding the Muskies scoreless. The Regents showed excellent plate discipline in the second inning, scoring three runs from bases-loaded walks. Breanna Collins came up in the third inning and blasted a homer to center field giving the Regents some breathing room. Jessica Kearns also scored in the third inning as a result of an error by the third baseman.
- Rockford continued its rally into the fourth inning, scoring two runs from Michaela Spanbauer's sacrifice fly to score Mikayla Seay and Breanna Collins single to left-center to score Gretchen Schrubbe.
- Lakeland inched closer with a three-run top of the fifth to trail the Regents 8-6. Errors costed the Regents as all three runs scored from singles but only one was earned.
- The Regents stayed hot scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. Mikayla Seay took advantage of an error by Lakeland which scored Jocelyn Callahan to make it 9-6 Regents.
- The Muskies scored in the seventh, although it was not enough to prevent the Regents from going on to take game one 9-7.
Game 2: Rockford 11 Lakeland 10
- Once again the Muskies struck first, scoring a run in the first inning from a double hit to center field.
- However, the Regents challenged the Muskies by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Emily Cox hit a single to drive in Gretchen Schrubbe. Breanna Collins doubled down the left-field line to score Jessica Kearns who was pinch-running for Cox. Paige Korsan helped out the Regents by grounding out to third to score Mikayla Seay. Emily Down kept the inning alive with a single into center field to score Breanna Collins.
- Lakeland took back the lead the very next inning by scoring four runs from a wild pitch and two singles making it 5-4.
- Rockford tied it up in the bottom of the second when Emily Cox ripped a triple to center field with two outs scoring Gretchen Schrubbe.
- The Regents regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth 7-5 with Gretchen Schrubbe's double to left-center scoring Jocelyn Callahan and a fielding error to score Gretchen Schrubbe.
- With both teams battling, Lakeland gained an 8-7 advantage in the top of the fifth and further increased its lead to 10-7 after the top of the sixth.
- Rockford started to chip away in the bottom of the sixth inning when Emily down put the ball in play to score Gretchen Schrubbe and make it a 10-8 game.
- The Regents continued to fight with its last chance to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Emily Cox gave the Regents the momentum it needed with a big double down the left-field line to score Annaka Bartz. Breanna Collins tied the game at 10-10 with a single through the left side to score Jocelyn Callahan. With bases loaded, Paige Korsan came up to the plate and hit a ground ball to the shortstop to score Jessica Kearns as the throw to the plate was late, giving the Regents an 11-10 win.
Game 1:
- Breanna Collins went 3-4 with her first home run of the season, 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored.
- Gretchen Schrubbe went 2-3 with a double, 2 RBI's, a run scored, a stolen base and a walk.
- Mikayla Seay went 2-3 with a double, 2 runs scored, an RBI and a walk.
- Jocelyn Callahan went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base.
Game 2:
- Gretchen Schrubbe had a season-high 4 hits in 5 at-bats. Schrubbe also recorded 2 doubles, 4 runs scored and an RBI.
- Emily Cox went 3-5 with a triple, a double and 3 RBI's.
- Breanna Collins went 3-5 with a double, 2 RBI's and a run scored.
- Jocelyn Callahan went 2-5 with a double and 2 runs scored.
The RU softball team returns to the diamond for a doubleheader on Friday, March 26 at Maranatha Baptist University. First pitch is scheduled for 5 PM.
