Regents Swept by Stars

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (19-15, 9-9 NACC) dropped both games in its Friday night doubleheader against the Dominican University Stars (11-16, 7-11 NACC). Rockford took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game but was shut down the rest of the game falling 3-2. The Regents struggled to piece together an offensive rally in the second game losing 2-0 to the Stars. However, Rockford clinches a berth in the NACC South Division Tournament for the first time in program history by virtue of Aurora University's sweep of Concordia University Chicago.

Game 1: Dominican 3 Rockford 2

  • Rockford started strong, putting two runs on the board in the first inning.
  • Emily Cox drove a single to right field to score Jocelyn Callahan and Mikayla Seay finished it off with a single up the middle to score Annaka Bartz.
  • Rylee Kelma got off to a great start sitting down the first three Dominican hitters she faced.
  • However, the Stars tied the game in the second inning with a sacrifice fly and a single to shortstop.
  • Dominican's pitched settled into a grove and dominated for the rest of the game to offset the Regents.
  • Unfortunately, the Stars broke the 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with a double to right-center and held the Regents scoreless for the rest of the game going on to win 3-2.

Game 2: Dominican 2 Rockford 0

  • It was a tight battle with both teams holding each other scoreless in the first three innings.
  • The Regents started to get momentum in the fourth inning with Annaka Bartz and Mikayla Seay both hitting singles with no outs, but the Stars made a pitching change with the game one starter coming in to pitch and got out of the inning with no runs.
  • Dominican was the first to score with a solo homer to left field in the fourth inning to lead the Regents 1-0.
  • The Stars increased its lead to 2-0 with a double to right field in the fifth inning.
  • Rockford had a chance in the sixth inning when Emily Cox led off with a double and Annaka Bartz hitting a single and advancing to second on the throw to put the tieing run in scoring position for the Regents with no outs. Unfortunately, Dominican was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run.
  • The Stars held the Regents scoreless going on to win game two 2-0.

The RU softball team returns to action Saturday, May 1 at home against Dominican University. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 PM.
