Story Links

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University football team (1-1) helped put on an offensive clinic in a high scoring loss to the Greenville University Panthers (2-0) in a Saturday afternoon clash. The teams would combine for 99 total points in a game that saw only one total punt on either side of the ball. It was a very strong first half from Greenville who put up 41 points in the first half, and Rockford found their stride in the second half with 28 points, but it wasn't enough as they would lose by a final score of 57-42. Jaelen Ray tied the school passing touchdowns record with 5, and Joey Owens tied the receiving touchdowns school record with 3.

  • The opening Greenville drive saw them go 89 yards in 7 plays, 2 passes by Butterfield of 33 and 26 yards would help them into the end zone, leading 7-0.
  • Rockford would only find 18 yards on 6 plays before giving Greenville the ball back.
  • A four-minute, 75 yard drive after the punt saw Greenville find their second score of the game off a rush by Paul Garrett.
  • Rockford would get the ball back and methodically moved down the field on passes by Jaelen Ray and a 12 yard rush by LaVar Johnson Jr., but would come up just short on a 4th down rush.
  • Greenville took over at the end of the first quarter, the score still 14-0.
  • A 9 play drive by Greenville went for only 39 yards. Lorenzo Walker III would sack Butterfield for a 12 yard loss. Then, the 4th and 4 try would see a tipped pass intercepted by Lonnell Foster, he would return it 8 yards before Butterfield would make a touchdown saving tackle.
  • A pass interference penalty against Greenville would set up Rockford nicely at the Greenville 27 yard line, and a rush by LaVar Johnson Jr. for 7 yards would set up a Jaelen Ray touchdown pass to Joey Owens for their first score of the game. Greenville still leading 14-7.
  • Greenville would get the touchdown back on a 34 yard pass by Butterfield for a touchdown. The missed extra point try would make it 20-7.
  • A fumble on the ensuing kickoff to Rockford would give Greenville the ball back on the Rockford half of the field. They would capitalize again on a 16 yard rush and then 3 yard touchdown pass to go up even more, 27-7.
  • Immediately after getting the ball back, however, Jaelen Ray would throw a complete pass to Joey Owens for a 63 yard touchdown score. It would make things interesting again at 27-14.
  • Greenville would get the ball back, and a rush by Matthew Tiger would find them 37 yards, and he would then catch a touchdown pass by Butterfield to make the score 34-14.
  • The Regents would go 3 and out, and an error on the punt would give Greenville the ball on the Rockford 23 yard line, ready to score again.
  • A first play 22 yard pass would put Greenville on the goal ine, where Paul Garrett would run it in for 6 more Panthers points.
  • With the first half clock running down, Jaelen Ray would find Maurice Williams for a 34 yard gain, but they were unable to convert it into points before time ran out.
  • Rockford would start with the ball in the second half and go three-and-out.
  • Greenville would get the ball, and would slowly move the ball down the field until a 4th and goal field goal would be blocked by Jordan Johnson and recovered by Peyton Bates, Rockford University ball.
  • It would be only two plays until the 3rd and 2 play would have Jaelen Ray intercepted. Greenville would take over.
  • 5 Greenville plays later, Martiez Bowins would intercept a pass by Butterfield and return it 20 yards to get the ball back for the Regents.
  • Jack Carey would take the first carry of the drive 43 yards to set up a great opportunity for a Regents score.
  • The score would come when Jaelen Ray would find Titus Cannon in traffic for a Rockford touchdown, the score now at 41-21.
  • Greenville would run out the third quarter clock, ready to run out time in the 4th.
  • The fourth quarter would see multiple positive rushes by Greenville that led to a quarterback run, resulting in another Greenville score. Regents would be down 47-21 after the missed extra point.
  • Emani Johnson and Joey Owens would get 33 and 37 yard passes from Ray, the latter of the two going for a touchdown, giving Owens his  3rd touchdown catch of the game. 47-28 Regents still trailing.
  • Greenville would take the ball back and run 7 straight rushing plays that set up a 21 yard field goal attempt. The kick would line drive its way through the uprights, cracking 50 points, the score now at 50-28.
  • Reaching the end of the game, Jaelen Ray would find Titus Cannon for his second receiving touchdown of the day, and with that touchdown pass, Ray would tie the school record for touchdown passes.
  • Greenville taking their time on the next drive, would catch Rockford napping on the right side and Adrian Hinton would rush for 36 yards into the end zone, to further the Greenville lead, 57-35.
  • The final drive would see Jaelen Ray attempt to throw for touchdown number 6, but instead with room would take it himself and score a rushing touchdown. This would be the final score of the game, 57-42.

  • Jaelen Ray threw for 395 yards, 7 yards off last weeks total, and 3rd highest in school history. He threw for 5 touchdowns, tying the school record, and rushed for a touchdown.

  • Jack Carey had the teams longest rush of the day of 43 yards, he finished with 47 total.

  • Lorenzo Walker III had 2 tackles for loss, both of them sacks.
  • Martiez Bowins and Lonnell Foster had the two interceptions on the day.
