GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Rockford University men's volleyball team kicked off the Calvin University Invite with a loss to the Adrian College Bulldogs, 3-1.
Jordan Hurst finished the match with nine kills, leading the team. He also contributed two aces and seven digs.
Nathan Simons added eight kills himself while also tacking on two aces and seven digs.
Tsubasa Namai led the team with 27 assists.
Adrian took control early in the first set. They worked their way to a 9-3 lead before the Regents found their stride. The next 24 points were split evenly 12-12, then the Bulldogs sealed the set with a 4-0 run to win 25-15.
The second set was ultra competitive. A myriad of lead changes kept this one close through its entirety. Tied 22-22, the Regents scored off a Simons kill and got help from two Bulldog errors to win the set 25-22 and even the match.
The next set was one-sided, with the Bulldogs holding their largest lead at 13 and winning the set 25-13.
Rockford played well with their backs against the wall. They had the upper hand, taking a 10-8 lead in the fourth set. Adrian proceeded to rattle off a 6-0 run to snatch the lead back. They wouldn't relinguish it from there, ending the match with a fourth set victory 25-20.
The Regents take on the University of Olivet at 1:00 p.m. EST, and will conclude the Calvin University Invite with matches against Franklin College and Calvin University on Saturday, Feb. 14.
