Softball Drops Both on Day Two of Florida Trip

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Rockford University softball team continued its spring break trip with games against the Rochester Institute of Technology and Geneva College on Monday. They fell 13-12 to RIT and 7-3 to Geneva.

The Regents will return to action tomorrow, March 10, for two games against SUNY Potsdam and Alfred State at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. EDT.

Game One: RIT 13, Rockford 12

It was a shootout to start the day for Rockford. Tomi Hill led off, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Sophia Hulsey matched her hit total in four at-bats, putting up a double and an RBI as well. Liz Mois displayed her power, going 2-for-4 with an RBI triple.

Kendall Knoll got the start in the circle, striking out two in just under four innings of action. She gave up seven runs, with three being earned. Neelah Vandeberg also pitched for two innings, giving up just one earned run.

This game was back-and-forth. Rockford got the scoring started in the bottom of the second. They put up six runs off of six hits and got some help from a few Tiger miscues.

RIT answered back with three runs in the top of the third. They kept the bats going in the fourth, scoring seven runs off of three hits. RU responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 10-8 RIT.

After the Tigers were able to extend their lead to three, Rockford fired back with four runs of their own to take the lead. Kaylee Jarrard and Hulsey each doubled in the inning.

Up one, the Regents were unable to hold onto the lead for long. RIT scored two runs off of two hits and two errors in the top of the sixth to go up 13-12.

That's what the final would be, as neither offense would score over the last inning and a half.

Game Two: Geneva 7, Rockford 3

Liz Mois continued her hot day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles against Geneva. Tomi Hill, Kara McMullin, and Makayla Howard each drove in a run for the Regents.

In the circle, Claire Shanahan went the entire way. She struck out four over her six innings of action and gave up three earned runs.

Both sides traded a run over the first two innings, going into the third tied 1-1. Geneva hit the accelerator in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs off of six hits to put themselves firmly in the driver's seat, 7-1.

The contest then turned into a pitcher's duel over the next three innings. Neither side scored again during that period.

The Regents tried to mount a rally in the top of the seventh. Mois doubled down the left field line and Brooklyn Lee singled to give RU some life. Mois was able to score off of a rundown and Lee was driven home by McMullin.

The Golden Tornadoes held the Regents from there, securing their 7-3 victory.
