Spartans Surge Past Regents

ROCKFORD, Ill. - After dropping four of their last five games, the Regents welcomed NAC division leading Aurora University to the Seaver Center in hopes of sharing the top spot in the conference. Rockford got on the board first with a three ball from senior forward Grant Olsen (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) to take a quick 3-0 lead, but the Spartans drained their first six shots of the game to cling to a 13-9 lead. Aurora would stretch their lead to as many as 16 points before the Regents made a few shots late to enter the half down 45-34. The Spartans outrebounded the Regents 28-19 and shot 43% from the field compared to Rockford's 34%

Aurora started the 2nd half with a 9-3 run to expand their lead to 17 just minutes into the half. The Spartans shot 60% from the field in the 2nd half including 5-9 from the 3-point line. Rockford couldn't keep up, shooting 38% while going 2-8 from the 3-point line. The Regents would get doubled up on the glass, getting outrebounded 24-12 but were able to force 10 Spartan turnovers. Rockford was unable to keep pace with Aurora as they cruised to a 95-70 victory Wednesday night.

Despite picking up 3 fouls less then five minutes into the game, junior guard Tory Minnifield (Blue Island/Eisenhower) was able to play through adversity and lead the Regents with a team-high 17 points and 5 rebounds. Minnifield would go 11-13 from the free throw line. Junior guard Scott Suchy (Genoa, Ill. / Genoa-Kingston) battled through a rough shooting to finish with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Olsen finished with 10 points and 3 steals.

Rockford will host MSOE Saturday at the Seaver Center after the women's game. Tip-Off is set for 4:15 PM
