LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (19-13, 9-7 NACC) swept the Edgewood College Eagles (9-27, 1-15 NACC) Sunday evening to finish out the weekend 4-0. Rockford broke the 1-1 tie in the fifth inning of the first game by scoring three runs and going on to win 4-1. The Regents dominated in the second game, keeping control and scoring in every inning except the second while holding the Eagles to just one run, winning game two 8-1.
Game 1: Rockford 4 Edgewood 1
- Both teams got off to a slow start with a scoreless first inning and the Eagles were the ones to strike first scoring a run in the second inning from a triple to left field.
- Rockford tied it in the bottom of the third when Emily Cox hit a sacrifice fly to right-field scoring Gretchen Schrubbe.
- The Regents added on in the fifth inning with three runs. Jessica Kearns and Jocelyn Callahan both scored on a throwing error by the third baseman and Destiny Kelsey hit a triple to right-center to score Breanna Collins.
- Excellent pitching and defensive work held off the Eagles for the remainder of the game allowing the Regents to take game one 4-1.
Game 2: Rockford 8 Edgewood 1
- The Regents were the first to get on the board with Emily Cox driving in Annaka Bartz on a two-out triple in the first inning.
- Rockford continued to chip away with another run in the third inning when Emily Cox singled down the left-field line to score Gretchen Schrubbe.
- The Eagles pushed across a run in the fourth inning by stealing home, but the Regents answered with another run in the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle by Olivia Swanson to score Breanna Collins.
- Rockford jumped out to a 6-1 lead with a three-run fifth inning. Breanna Collins singled up the middle to score Annaka Bartz. Destiny Kelsey also singled up the middle scoring McCathran Andrew and Breanna Collins scored from a throwing error by the shortstop.
- The Regents added two runs in the sixth inning from Emily Cox's double to left-center to score Annaka Bartz and Mikayla Seay's single up the middle to score Cox.
- Outstanding pitching by Mikayla Seay throwing seven innings while only allowing four hits and one run propelled the Regents to win game two 8-1.
Game 1:
- Destiny Kelsey went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI.
- Emily Cox went 1 for 1 with a double and an RBI.
- Gretchen Schrubbe went 1 for 4 with a triple and a run scored.
- Jocelyn Callahan went 1 for 3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
- Rylee Klema received her eighth win of the season pitching a complete game, giving up 6 hits, 1 earned run and striking out 3.
Game 2:
- Emily Cox had a monstrous day going 4 for 4 with a triple, a double, 3 RBI's and a run scored.
- Annaka Bartz went 2 for 2 with 3 runs scored and a stolen base.
- Destiny Kelsey went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
- Breanna Collins went 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and 2 runs scored.
- Mikayla Seay picked up her ninth win of the season. pitching a complete game only allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 5.
The Rockford University softball team returns to action Friday, April 30 at home against Dominican University. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 5 PM.
