Smothering Defense Propels Regents Past Cougars

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Rockford University women's basketball team won its final road game of the season 65-53 on Monday night at Concordia University Chicago. Rockford held the Cougars to under 10 points in two of the four quarters and under 30% shooting for the entire game. The Regents also committed just nine fouls in the game, leading to just six free throw attempts for CUC. Conversely, Rockford shot nearly 40% from the floor and attempted 33 free throws in the game. The Regents have now won three straight games at Concordia University Chicago.

  • The Regents could not get anything going in the first quarter. 
  • Rockford quickly found themselves down 12-2 and then trailed 19-6 heading into the second. 
  • However, the Regents scored the first seven points of the second quarter and cut the CUC lead in half. Four different Regents scored over that span, led by three points from D'Asia Washington
  • Following a quick Concordia Chicago bucket, Rockford proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to make it just a two-point game. D'Asia Washington once again led the charge with three of the six points. 
  • After the Cougars pushed their lead back up to six, the Regents scored the final three points of the half, to enter the break only trailing by three at 27-24.
  • Rockford tied the game four times in the third quarter, with the latter coming at 36-36, before taking its first lead of the evening.
  • Katie Paredes hit a triple with 52 seconds left in the period to give the Regents their first lead of the day, and then knocked down jumper in the closing seconds to make it a 41-36 RU advantage heading into the fourth. 
  • Rockford extended its lead up to eight on a Lexi Keating layup, before CUC made one final push.
  • The Cougars scored the next six points to make it a 46-44 game at the 6:14 mark. 
  • Fortunately, Rockford responded with made layups by D'Asia Washington and Katie Paredes to push the Regents' advantage back up to six at 50-44.
  • CUC never got any closer than four the remainder of the game as Rockford really dug in defensively.
  • The Regents held the Cougars without a point over the final two minutes and made enough free throws down the stretch to secure a 65-53 win. 
Stat Leaders
  • D'Asia Washington tallied her sixth double-double of the season and reached the 20-point plateau for the fourth time this year. Washington finished with a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Katie Paredes recorded her second double-double of the year. Paredes finished with 13 points, tied her season-high with 11 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block.
  • Nia Wilkerson added 8 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist.
  • Lexi Keating had 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists off the bench.
