Carlos came to Rockford College as a freshman and immediately became an integral part of the Regents success on the soccer field. The 1984 Regents went 11-4-2 winning their sixth consecutive NIIC Championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Great Lakes Region Tournament. Indeed an auspicious beginning to the soccer career of the soft spoken, high octane performer who came to be a symbol of Rockford's soccer success in the mid 1980s. During his soccer career, the Regents won 62% of their games including winning an astounding 82% of their NIIC games. Carlos also led Rockford to three conference championships and a berth in the NCAA Regionals where the Regents lost 2-1 in overtime to the eventual National Champions, Wheaton.

Carlos was named an All-American in 1987 by the American Soccer Coaches Association. He also earned All-NIIC honors in each of his four years and was a team captain and team MVP in both 1986 and 1987.
