Women's swimming was but a year old when Colette transferred to Rockford from Northeast Missouri State. An avid fitness enthusiast, she joined the swim team and was a major impact on its success. She began an onslaught on the school and Seaver pool records that would be continued several years later by her sister Maggie. Colette swam many events including free, breast and both relays. In her highlight year of 1985-86, she broke Illinois records in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke. That effort springboarded her into the NCAA Division III National Championships where her eleventh place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke earned her All-American status.

When she was finished, Colette had harvested both state and school records. Her times of 1:10.28 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:30.80 in the 200-yard breaststroke remain the standards for Regent swimmers today.

In her senior year, she traded her tank suit and goggles for running shoes and a singlet to complete on the Regents cross country team. Colette earned NIIC honors as well as being named team MVP.

A brilliant student, Colette earned the prestigious Hans Wolpe Student-Athlete of the Year award in both 1986 and 87 along with being selected to the NIIC All-Scholastic Team.
