After spending two years at Northwestern University, Chip Geiger transferred to Rockford College in the fall of 1974, where, as a diver for the Regent swimming team, he established the finest athletic credentials of any athlete in the history of Rockford College.
His first official competition as a Regent occurred on January 25, 1975 in a swimming meet against the University of Illinois-Chicago Circle. The Regents won the meet 59-54, and Chip set his first two meet and school records while recording first place finishes on both the one and three meter diving boards.
During his two seasons with the Regents, Rockford College was 19-6 in dual meet competition, and Chip took first place on the one and three meter boards in every dual meet in which he was entered.
In larger invitational meets, his superior abilities became even more evident. During his two seasons as Rockford College's premier diver, he took first place in every one and three meter event, with one exception, during regular season meets. That one exception was a second place finish on the three meter board at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships where a diver from the University of Illinois edged him for first place in the event.
Chip's achievements in the National Championships are even more spectacular. During the 1974-75 NAIA Championships, he finished second on the three meter board and third on the one meter board, earning 25 of the Regents' 28 total points, which gave Rockford College a 13th place finish out of 41 teams.Â
At the 1976 NAIAÂ Championships, he finished fourth on the three meter board and fifth on the one meter board to score all 23 points and give the Regents a 15th place finish out of 43 teams. That same year, he went on to the NCAA Division III Championships where he placed first in both diving events. Chip scored all 32 points for the Regents to place Rockford College 15th out of 62 teams.Â
He completed his diving career at Rockford College by competing in the NCAA Division I Championships where he finished 31st our of 74 divers in the one meter competition and 58th out of 70 divers in the three meter competition.Â
Holder of all Rockford College's diving records, co-captain his senior year, twice selected by his teammates as the team's MVP, former College-Athlete of the Year at Rockford College and six time All-American in two years, Chip Geiger maximized his talents and succeeded in achieving an unprecedented athletic career.Â
